Getting Started is easy. You check our calendar and schedule a time for your free Initial Visit.
During your free Initial Visit, you will learn more about how our service works, understand what it costs, and see how you can benefit. We will send you home with a Registration Kit.
About four days after you return your Registration Kit, we can schedule your Welcome Visit.
During the Welcome Visit you will get to know your Financial Advisor, discuss your primary financial concerns, and understand how to put our process to work for you.
The next step is to cut through the overwhelm of financial documents. We do this during the EFR VISIT, in which you meet with your Financial Advisor to organize all of your “financial stuff” into an Electronic Financial Record (EFR).
Next is your Goal Visit, designed to help you set, clarify, and prioritize goals to:

Save for an emergency
Pay off student loans
Buy a home
After setting your goals, we will have a to discuss the details of your financial plans and talk about what it takes to put them into action.

Is your service right for me?
If you are a physician who needs a real financial plan and wants a skilled professional to help put that plan into action, Physician Family is for you. Our service is purpose-built to help you achieve financial security, which means having all the money you need when you need it.
What if I don't know anything about personal finance?
We give you the education you need to make financial decisions with confidence. We are happy to begin at the beginning, starting with what you understand and building from there, educating you as we move forward together.
When will you begin charging me?
Your Initial Visit is free. Once you become a client, we will hold a Welcome Visit and that’s when we charge a fee that’s prorated for the first partial month. After that, we collect fees by ACH bank draft on the first business day of the month for which services will be rendered.
Can I pay with my credit card instead of ACH?
We believe that becoming financially secure means moving away from debt, so we do not accept credit cards.
Are there any hidden fees?
No. While your financial institution and other service providers (your accountant or attorney) may charge you separately for their products and services, all of Physician Family's work is covered by one monthly fee.
Why don’t you charge by the hour?
Advisors who bill by the hour have an incentive to waste time and, for the physicians we serve, there’s nothing more precious than time. From our perspective, subscription fees give us the ability to earn a stable salary so we can feel comfortable putting our hearts and souls into the work we do for you.
How long is the service agreement?
We work on a month by month basis. While we hope to serve you for years to come, you can cancel your engagement with us at any time by email or by phone. Refunds for partial months are prorated.
How do your Financial Planning services differ from those of other firms?
We recognize that financial security means something different to a first year attending or a mid-career practitioner, so we offer a modular approach to financial planning for doctors as you move from training toward retirement. Each financial plan is a written document containing a blueprint for how to get on track. Your financial plan, along with your Electronic Financial Record, allows you and your Financial Advisor to chart a clear path toward reaching your financial goals.
What is your approach to Financial Consulting?
Our Financial Consulting services are coordinated with your tax specialist and your legal counsel. We can also provide referrals to reputable insurance agents and bankers who have experience serving physicians. We offer help with:

What does “Investment Guidance” mean?
Simply that we give you the framework you need to manage your own accounts. We can recommend specific mutual funds for each of your accounts. We also provide you with an asset allocation recommendation and Investment Policy Statements.
Will Physician Family manage my investments?
Yes, but only if you want us to. We can manage all your accounts or you can manage all your accounts or a little of both. In fact, you can even hire us as your primary financial planners and let someone else (including robo-advisors like Betterment) manage your accounts for you. As financial planners for doctors, our primary concern is to see that your investment portfolio supports your ability to become financially secure.
Do you have a minimum investment?
No. We are prepared to help with all your accounts, regardless of size.
I have a Fidelity 401k. Can you manage that?
Yes we can. We manage Fidelity 401k, 403b, 457b and 401a accounts for many clients.
I own Vanguard funds. Can you help with those?
Yes, in three ways! If you already have a relationship with Vanguard, we can manage those funds via limited power of attorney. As an alternative, we can give you recommendations about which Vanguard funds to own and you can manage your accounts yourself. If you want us to manage your accounts for you at TD Ameritrade, we can recommend Vanguard funds in the accounts you hold there.
I have heard that DFA Funds are good. Do you use DFA Funds?
Yes, we do use mutual funds offered by Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA). These funds are only available in accounts we manage for clients at TD Ameritrade Institutional.
What about my 529 plan? And my health savings accounts? Can you manage those?
Yes. In fact, we can manage any account with a login. However, to keep you safe, we will not manage an account that might give us the ability to withdraw funds. In those cases, we can help you move the account to a place where we can safely manage it for you, or give guidance about how you can manage it yourself.
I want to manage my own investments. Can I still be a client?
Absolutely. If you want us to act solely as your financial planner, we can do that while you manage your accounts yourself. Some married couples engage us this way as a "backup plan" in case the investment-wise spouse dies or becomes incapacitated.
Where will you keep my money?
You are free to open an account at any financial institution. If you ask us to manage your IRA or taxable accounts for you, we prefer to use TD Ameritrade because it makes our work easier. They offer great service at a low price so you can keep more of what you earn. For your security, we never take possession or “custody” of your accounts, your money or your securities.
What is included in Portfolio Management?
This is professional management of HSAs, 529s, SEP-IRAs, backdoor Roths, solo-401ks, etc. We save you time with signature-ready paperwork to open accounts and consolidate scattered accounts. Our Portfolio Management services include:

What happens to my accounts if I terminate my relationship with Physician Family?
Your accounts are always yours. You keep your accounts and the money that’s in them.
How much do you charge to manage investments?
Our level monthly subscription fee covers all of our services, including Portfolio Management, Investment Guidance, Financial Planning and Financial Consulting. There is no separate charge for any of these services.
Is there a penalty for cancellation?
No. There is no cancellation fee.
