In a discussion of financial planning best practices, this industry newsletter asks Certified Financial Planner® W. Ben Utley to define a sound client-advisor interaction:
"He says that the professional advisor needs to control the planning process, but not the actual decisions. 'I try to determine the client's values and motivations using some life planning tools,' he says. 'Then I apply this to the universe of strategies, where only value-appropriate strategies fall through the screen. THEN I give these options to the clients and let them decide. If I control the process, and they control the decisions, then we are likely to make progress."
